General information
What is the new requirement?
Starting January 1, 2026, the Italian Revenue Agency (Agenzia delle Entrate) requires businesses to connect their electronic payment terminals (POS) to their telematic cash registers (Registratore Telematico, or RT).
How does the connection work?
You do not need to buy any new hardware or physical cables to link your devices. The entire setup is managed online with just a few steps in the government's portal.
Does this apply to my business?
This rule applies to you if you operate in Italy and use:
- Physical POS terminals (Mollie PAX and Tap terminals)
- SoftPOS / Tap-to-Pay (using the Mollie app or the Tap app on a smartphone or tablet)
- Virtual POS / E-commerce gateways but only if you certify your online sales using a physical cash register or issue digital receipts via the Revenue Agency's free web interface (the Documento Commerciale Online). If you run a pure e-commerce store and only issue standard invoices without a cash register, you are exempt.
Exemptions: You do not need to link your POS if you use it exclusively for vending machines, fuel sales, or selling state-monopoly goods (ex: tobacco). If you use the exact same POS terminal to collect payments for both exempt items (like tobacco) and standard retail items (like coffee), the exemption is voided, and the terminal must be fully connected to your cash register.
Important Deadlines
- For POS active in January 2026: You must complete the connection by April 20, 2026.
- For new POS activated after January 2026: You must complete the connection between the 6th day and the last day of the second month after activation (for example, if you activate a terminal in March, you must register it between May 6 and May 31).
Note: The Italian government enforces this strictly. Failing to connect your devices can result in fines ranging from €1,000 to €4,000 for each unconnected device.
How do I complete the connection?
Step 1: Gather your Mollie information
Because Mollie operates as a foreign provider in Italy, your devices will not automatically appear in the government's pre-filled drop-down lists. You will need to manually add them using the following exact details:
- Acquirer Italian/Italiano or Abroad/Estero: Estero
- Codice Fiscale Acquirer (Acquirer Tax Code): 815839091B01
- Denominazione Acquirer (Acquirer name): Mollie BV
-
Numero di contratto di convenzionamento (Agreement Number): your Mollie Organization ID
- Your Organization ID is displayed on the top right of your monthly Mollie invoice
- You can also find the Organization ID in your Mollie Dashboard. It is the number starting with a # found in the menu when you click your profile icon in the top left corner.
-
Terminal ID: You will need the specific Terminal ID for each device you want to connect
- For PAX and TAP terminals
- Log in to your Mollie Dashboard
- Go to "Point-of-sale"
- Click on the terminal you want to register
- Go to "Terminal information"
- Use the Serial Number of the terminal.
- For Tap-to-Pay via the Mollie App or the Tap App
- Log in to your Mollie Dashboard
- Go to "Point-of-sale"
- Click on the terminal you want to register
- Go to "Terminal information"
- Use the Terminal ID of the terminal.
- For PAX and TAP terminals
Step 2: Connect via the Agenzia delle Entrate Portal
Note: You can complete this procedure yourself, or your legally delegated tax advisor (commercialista) can do it on your behalf via the portal.
- Go to the "Fatture e Corrispettivi" portal (https://ivaservizi.agenziaentrate.gov.it/portale/) and connect using your SPID, CIE, CNS digital identity, or Entratel/Fisconline credentials.
- In the "Gestore ed Esercente" box, click "Accedi ai servizi".
- On the left-hand menu, select "Collegamento dispositivi - POS", then click "Gestione collegamenti".
-
Add your Mollie Terminal: Click "Aggiungi POS" (Add POS).
- Since Mollie is not in the automatic search, click "Aggiungi acquirer" (Add Acquirer)
- You will need to provide all the details collected in the previous step
-
Link to your Cash Register: Once added, select "Collegamento Puntuale" (if you have up to 5 cash registers). Choose your cash register's serial number on the left side, select your newly added Mollie terminal on the right side, and click "Collega" (Connect).
- Note for SoftPOS: If you are connecting a mobile Tap-to-Pay device, the system will ask you to input the physical address of the store where the mobile device is primarily used.
Specific cases
Integration with Documento Commerciale Online
If you are a merchant, independent freelancer, or mobile service provider who does not possess or utilize physical Telematic Register hardware, but instead issues digital receipts via the Revenue Agency's free web interface (the Documento Commerciale Online), a distinct, parallel connection process exists within the portal.
- Access the specific section designated for the "Documento Commerciale Online" directly from the main portal.
- Locate the "Funzionalità di supporto" (Support functionalities) section and click on "Associazione strumenti di pagamento elettronico" (Association of electronic payment instruments).
- From this screen, follow the exact identical manual addition and connection sequences described in “Step 2” above.
How to exclude a POS terminal
If you have a terminal that never processes payments using Documento Commerciale and is not linked to a cash register, you can permanently exclude it from the linking requirement:
- In "Collegamento dispositivi - POS", go to the section "POS non collegati".
- Identify or add the specific terminal(s) used only for invoices.
- Flag them for definitive exclusion.
Important note: If a POS is used for both invoices and commercial documents, it must be linked. The exclusion only applies to devices that are 100% dedicated to invoice/exonerated payments.
Reporting changes in your setup or situation
If you stop using Mollie, a PAX or Tap terminal, close your business, or replace your telematic cash register with a new one, you must update the government portal. You must log back into the system to update or delete the old connection. This update must be completed following the same deadline rules (between the 6th day and the last day of the second month following the change).
