Card types
These properties define the type of card that is used in a payment:
- Brand: We support all major card brands like Visa, Mastercard and American Express.
- Funding type: Credit or debit. Payments with debit cards are debited immediately from a bank account. Payments from credit cards are paid by the bank first so that the cardholder can pay back this amount later.
- Audience: Consumer or commercial. Consumer cards are issued to a single person, while commercial cards are issued to a business.
- Issuing country: The country that the bank or issuer of the card is based in.
Transaction region
The region of a transaction depends on where the card was issued and where the payment from the card is received. There are several regions we consider:
-
Domestic: A card is used to pay a webshop in the same country from which the card is issued.
- For example, a domestic transaction is when you use a card from a Dutch bank to pay in the Netherlands.
-
Intra-zone: A card is used to pay a webshop in a different country from where it is issued, but both countries are considered to be in the same economic zone. With Mollie, you can receive card payments from the EEA zone.
- For example, an intra-zone transaction is when you use a card issued in Germany to pay a webshop based in France. Both countries are in the EEA zone.
-
Inter-zone: A card is used to pay a webshop that is outside of the card issuer’s country and zone.
- For example, an inter-zone transaction is when you use a card issued in Brazil (outside the EEA) to pay a webshop based in Belgium (in the EEA).
-
The United Kingdom: The UK is considered to be in the same zone as the EEA if the payment originates from an EEA country. However, the UK is considered to be in a different zone if the payment originates from the UK.
- Payment from a UK card to a UK business is a domestic transaction.
- Payment from an EEA card to a UK business is an intra-zone transaction.
- Payment from a UK card to an EEA business is an inter-zone transaction.
