PSD2 (the Second Payments Service Directive) makes payments easier and safer in the European Economic Area (EEA) and the United Kingdom. It enables third parties to communicate and share data with a bank. This enables customers to make payments in a chatbot or webshops to show a customer's bank balance on the checkout page.
What is Strong Customer Authentication?
PSD2 makes sure the communication between two parties is made possible without losing safe and secure payments. With Strong Customer Authentication (SCA), consumers need to verify their purchases with an extra verification step, such as a code or fingerprint check.

When you use Mollie, you do not need to do anything to implement SCA and PSD2. We make sure that the payment methods we offer comply with the guidelines of SCA.
We currently support 3D Secure 2.1 for all major card companies. The new version of 3D Secure is a two-factor and PSD2-SCA compliant authentication method, which allows for the use of biometric data, like fingerprints and facial recognition, as a security step for online payments.
In addition, we also support 3D Secure 1.0, in case of banks that only support this previous version.
