What are PSD2 and Strong Customer Authentication?

PSD2 (the Second Payments Service Directive) makes payments easier and safer in the European Economic Area (EEA). It enables third parties to communicate with a bank and to share information and data between the banks and these parties. This enables, for example, customers to make payments in a chatbot, or webshops to show your bank balance in their online environment.

What is Strong Customer Authentication?

PSD2 makes sure the communication between two parties is made possible without losing safe and secure payments. With Strong Customer Authentication (SCA), consumers need to verify their purchases with an extra verification step, such as a phone, PIN code, or fingerprint.

What does Strong Customer Authentication mean for me?

You do not notice anything of SCA and PSD2. We make sure that the payment methods we offer comply with the guidelines of SCA.

We currently support 3D Secure 2.1 for all major card companies. The new version of 3D Secure is a two-factor and PSD2 SCA compliant authentication method, which allows for the use of biometric data, like fingerprints and facial recognition, as a security step for online payments.

In addition, we also support 3D Secure 1.0, in the case of banks only supporting this previous version.
