Why do I see the old VAT number on my Dutch sole proprietor's invoice?

As of 1 January 2020, a new VAT identification number applies to sole proprietors in the Netherlands. This new VAT number is there to protect the sole proprietors’ privacy, since it is no longer linked to the private citizen service number (BSN). In 2019 you have received a letter from the Dutch Tax and Customs Administration (Belastingdienst) with your new VAT number.

Why is the old VAT number still on my invoice?

Because the new VAT number could only be adjusted in your Mollie account after 1 January 2020 and an invoice is generated for a whole month, the old VAT number will still be on the invoice of 1 February 2020. This should not cause any problems. It is not possible to generate a new invoice afterwards.

If your sole proprietorship uses Mollie only for processing transactions, it is not mandatory to have a VAT number in your Mollie account. Are you a Mollie partner and do you receive partner commission? Then it is mandatory to have the new VAT number in your Mollie account.

How can I adjust the VAT number in my Mollie account?

The new VAT identification number can only be displayed on an invoice if you have adjusted this yourself in your Mollie account. You can easily do this by logging in to your Mollie account and going to Settings> Organization. You can change the number below 'VAT information'.
